The Camulodunum
Before the Great Fire of 1848 that decimated so many buildings in Colchester, The Camulodunum was an ancient tavern, the name of which was unknown. Ironically the recent renaming of the pub has taken us back two centuries to the "unknown tavern" as we have not been able to display the name of the pub at the reopening of this iconic pub. It was in Colchester that Emperor Claudius received the surrender of the Celtic kings to found the Roman Province of Britannia. Every era since - from the Saxon, the Norman, the Medieval, the Tudor, the Stuart, the Georgian, the Victorian to the Modern - has left its mark on the town and added to its heritage. Relax with a glass of wine and a meal at the Camulodunum and soak up the sense of history that the town has to offer.
